Our Choices For 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum 2020/2021

We are so excited to be kicking off our school year next week! In my last post I announced that we are homeschooling for this next school year. Still so crazy to be saying that!! We can’t wait to get things started! I have had lots of questions about material we are using and how we are structuring things, so I wanted to share what we have chosen for our family!

I have spent hours and hours watching every YouTube video and reading every blog post about 5th grade homeschool curriculum to see what I thought would be best for our family. Rather than buying one full curriculum from a certain place, we chose to buy certain things from different companies. I will also say that I am more of a “free spirit” when it comes to this type of thing. Although I do have a plan in place, I read plenty of things saying “don’t outline your whole year because you never know what will work and not work for you”. I have an idea of what we are going to be doing, but we will be taking things week by week. Especially if my daughter has a peaked interest in a certain topic, then we will run with that and get more in depth with that specific topic/idea.

The Good and The Beautiful is a very popular place for curriculum. They have a lot of free downloads right now which I think is wonderful. We downloaded the Science unit from them and I purchased the Handwriting Workbook. We are really excited about both!

BJU Press is another popular place for curriculum. This is who we will be doing out English with and we got the English 5 Subject Kit. To go along with our English, I also bought these on Amazon just as some more fun things to do. I got one grammar workbook and one writing workbook.

I saw this Brain Quest workbook and we are also going to be using the pages in to when they apply to what we are learning about. The pages look super fun and I’m excited to include this.

For Social Studies we are going to be working through this 180 Days of Social Studies workbook.

Math we chose to go with Math Mammoth. I am excited to give this a try!!

I am also going to put on the list below other school supply things I bought for our homeschool room!

I know as the year progresses we will learn and grow and see what works and doesn’t work for our family. This is what we are starting off with for now!

We Are Homeschooling – Choosing to Homeschool 1 Child

Alright, we are really doing this! We are homeschooling!!! *deep breaths*

I will start by saying I NEVER thought I would be this mom or we would be the homeschool type of family. We LOVE our school district and our teachers and never thought we would pull our child away from that. I worked at one of our schools and it was the best job I’ve ever had. I often say one of the BEST things about out town is our teachers. They are some of the best.

I know life and the world is crazy right now. With that, I will say we have been thinking about homeschool for about 6 or more months now. I always just pushed it to the back of my mind for many reasons. I worked full time, we only have one kid so what would this do to her socially, and at the end of the day….we just weren’t a homeschool family, right?!

Right now in this season of life we really feel like this is the best thing for our family. And ultimately, that is what matters most right now. When we asked our 10 year old why she wanted to be homeschooled I really thought she would feed me some crap answers but I was shocked at her responses. She sounded so grown up. And at that moment…I knew she would excel on debate team. HAHA! And I also knew at that moment maybe we should start finding a way to make this a reality.

Homeschooling is such a personal decision. I know many families who homeschool for many different reasons. Especially right now….life is just….nuts.

More than anything…we are beyond excited for this next chapter for our family! We have been looking up homeschool stuff for months and I’m excited to kick off our year! I am excited to share our journey over the next year. Excited to share the ups and downs and new experiences we have as we navigate this new chapter.

I have been so happy to see all the posts supporting families no matter what they choose to do this next year. It is so uplifting in this time or uncertainty. This is totally new for us and it is going to be a wild year! This will also be the first year that I am officially staying home since our little one was in school! AHHH!! That seems unreal! Which will ALSO mean more time to fully dive into photography! So…who wants to book a shoot?!

We can’t wait!!! Pray for us this next year! We will need it!
